Charles E. Finsley
A Field Guide to Fossils of Texas
Paperback 2nd edition (July 1999)
Gulf Publishing Co; ISBN: 0891230440
Reviewer: Michael K. Smith

This is the basic bible for Texas collectors, providing the broadest coverage available in a single volume. Seventy to eighty percent of what you find will be in here. You may not always be able to identify down to the species, but you will generaly be able to locate the genus. Some items, like shark teeth and ammonites, will often require additional resources, but overall this is the first book you need when collecting in Texas.

The one annoying aspect of the book are the geological maps added in the back of the second editon. They are not very readable. For decent maps you need to contact the UT Bureau of Economic Geology.
